Renault automatic gearbox repair

EDC (Efficient Dual Clutch) is the Getrag dual-clutch gearbox fitted to the Renault Clio IV, Megane III/IV, Captur, Kadjar and Scenic. The 6DCT250 (DC4) is the dry version for engines up to around 250 Nm; the 7DCT300 is the wet version for more powerful units. The usual problem is worn K1/K2 clutches or a mechatronic unit failure — fault codes DF1111/DF1112 mean the clutch bite point has been lost.

We specialise in repairing and rebuilding automatic gearboxes in Renault vehicles. Our specialists have years of hands-on experience with every gearbox this manufacturer fits.

Common Renault gearbox models

EDC 6-speed (Getrag 6DCT250 / DC4)

A dry dual-clutch gearbox fitted to the Clio IV, Captur and Megane III. The design is close to the Ford PowerShift DPS6 – the same K1/K2 clutch wear patterns, the same adaptation procedures.

EDC 7-speed (Getrag 7DCT300)

A wet dual-clutch gearbox in the Megane IV, Talisman, Espace V and Kadjar TCe. It handles higher torque, but it needs a healthy electric pump and clean oil.

CVT X-Tronic (Jatco JF015E / JF016E)

The continuously variable gearbox in Renaults with petrol and hybrid engines (Captur, Kadjar dCi-CVT). The weak points are the steel belt, the shaft bearings and the oil pump. Nissan NS-3 oil.

DP0 / AL4

The 4-speed torque converter automatic from the PSA group, fitted to the older Megane II, Scenic II and Laguna II. The classic faults are worn solenoids and a contaminated valve body.

Renault EDC gearbox – repair and rebuild costs

What an EDC repair costs on a Renault depends on the scope of the work. Diagnostics and reading the DF1111/DF1112 fault codes are part of the initial quote. Rebuilding an EDC mechatronic unit (Hall sensor board, control module repair, programming and cloning to the original car) is typically a smaller job than replacing the K1/K2 clutches outright.

Replacing the K1/K2 clutch pack in a 6DCT250 means taking the gearbox out of the car, opening the housing and running the mandatory bite point adaptation afterwards (Renault Clip / CAN Clip). Without a correct adaptation the juddering comes back even with new clutches. On the 7DCT300 (wet) we also check the electric pump and the oil filter.

Every repair is quoted individually after diagnostics — the customer gets the scope of work, a list of the parts used and the expected turnaround (usually 3–7 working days). Mechatronic unit rebuilds carry a 12-month warranty; clutch replacement carries 6 to 24 months, depending on the scope.

X-Tronic CVT in a Renault – servicing and typical failures

The X-Tronic CVT (Jatco JF015E/JF016E) in the Renault Captur and Kadjar is a continuously variable automatic with a steel belt and two planetary brake bands. Unlike a conventional torque converter automatic, it changes ratio seamlessly, with no gear steps you can feel. It needs Nissan NS-3 oil, changed every 40,000–60,000 km.

The most common signs of wear: a steady, rising whine (worn primary and secondary shaft bearings), vibration when pulling away (belt slip), a drop in power and a gearbox overheating warning. A late oil change speeds up belt wear — and the belt is the most expensive part of the repair.

A CVT rebuild covers stripping the unit, replacing the belt and the bands if they are worn, replacing the bearings, rebuilding the oil pump and testing hydraulic pressures. An adaptation reset and a control unit calibration are mandatory once it is back in the car.

Renault gearbox repair – what you need to know

Renault uses four families of automatic gearbox, and each has its own service logic: the 6-speed EDC (Getrag DC4, dry dual clutch), the 7-speed EDC (Getrag 7DCT300, wet dual clutch), the X-Tronic CVT (Jatco) and the conventional torque converter DP0/AL4 from the PSA group. The first diagnostic step is always to read the codes with Renault Clip / CAN Clip — a generic OBD2 tool does not show manufacturer codes (DF…).

Across the Renault range, DF1111 and DF1112 are the standard codes — they mean the K1/K2 clutch bite point has been lost in an EDC. The codes on their own are not enough to tell whether the gearbox only needs an adaptation or a new clutch pack, so we check the fault history, the hydraulic pressure readings and the condition of the oil before quoting.

We work remotely with customers from all over Poland (the control unit or the gearbox comes to us by courier) and we take cars in at our workshop in Deszkowice Drugie near Zamość. We also repair Renault TCM/TCU control units — electronics diagnosis, board-level repair and cloning to the original VIN.

Most common Renault gearbox problems

The most common sign of worn K1/K2 clutches or of a lost bite point (DF1111/DF1112). In the 6DCT250 (dry) this typically appears after 80,000–120,000 km; in the 7DCT300 (wet) later, when oil changes have been neglected.

The gearbox locks into one gear and a service warning appears on the dash. Common causes: worn Hall sensors on the board, a control module fault, or low hydraulic pressure in the mechatronic unit.

A rising whine from the primary and secondary shafts in the Jatco JF015E/JF016E. A late oil change speeds up wear of the steel belt — the most expensive part in a CVT.

The classic problem of contaminated solenoids or a failed control unit in the older Megane II, Scenic II and Laguna II.

Renault gearbox maintenance tips

In the EDC 6DCT250 (dry), change the oil every 60,000 km or at the first sign of juddering – always with an adaptation reset in Renault Clip
In the EDC 7DCT300 (wet), change the Type-D oil every 60,000 km and check the electric pump and the filter at the same time
The X-Tronic CVT takes Nissan NS-3 oil, changed every 40,000–60,000 km – never use NS-2 or a universal ATF
After every oil change in an EDC the clutches have to be adapted (K1/K2 bite point learning)
DP0/AL4 – flush the solenoids every 80,000 km, oil Esso LT 71141 or Elf Renaultmatic D3
Avoid holding the car on the brake on a hill in D – in a dry EDC this overheats the clutches

The weak points are the steel belt, the shaft bearings and the oil pump. Nissan NS-3 oil. DP0 / AL4: The 4-speed torque converter automatic from the PSA group, fitted to the older Megane II, Scenic II and Laguna II. The classic faults are worn solenoids and a contaminated valve body.

What are the most common problems with Renault automatic gearboxes?

EDC juddering when pulling away and in town: The most common sign of worn K1/K2 clutches or of a lost bite point (DF1111/DF1112). In the 6DCT250 (dry) this typically appears after 80,000–120,000 km; in the 7DCT300 (wet) later, when oil changes have been neglected. EDC mechatronic unit failure and limp mode: The gearbox locks into one gear and a service warning appears on the dash. Common causes: worn Hall sensors on the board, a control module fault, or low hydraulic pressure in the mechatronic unit. Steady whine from an X-Tronic CVT: A rising whine from the primary and secondary shafts in the Jatco JF015E/JF016E. A late oil change speeds up wear of the steel belt — the most expensive part in a CVT. DP0/AL4 not responding to a gear change: The classic problem of contaminated solenoids or a failed control unit in the older Megane II, Scenic II and Laguna II.

How often should the oil in Renault automatic gearboxes be changed?

In the EDC 6DCT250 (dry), change the oil every 60,000 km or at the first sign of juddering – always with an adaptation reset in Renault Clip

Do you repair every Renault gearbox model?

Yes, we specialise in repairing every type of Renault automatic gearbox, including EDC 6-speed (Getrag 6DCT250 / DC4), EDC 7-speed (Getrag 7DCT300), CVT X-Tronic (Jatco JF015E / JF016E), DP0 / AL4.

How long does a control unit repair take on Renault automatic gearboxes?

Repairing the control unit in Renault automatic gearboxes usually takes 2 to 5 working days, depending on the fault. Simple electronic faults take 1-2 days; complex failures that need cloning or software modification can take up to a week.

Which parts do you use to repair Renault gearboxes?

We use only original Renault parts and high-quality equivalents from reputable manufacturers. For control units we fit original electronic components, capacitors and integrated circuits. For mechanical gearbox parts we use original clutches, solenoids and filters.

Can failures of Renault automatic gearboxes be prevented?

Yes, regular servicing considerably extends the life of Renault automatic gearboxes. The essentials: change the oil on schedule, avoid hard driving, monitor the oil level and condition, and have the car diagnosed as soon as the first symptoms appear.

What does a control unit repair cost on Renault automatic gearboxes?

The cost of repairing the control unit in Renault automatic gearboxes is quoted individually — it depends on the control unit and on the fault. Initial diagnosis is free and you get a detailed quote before any work starts. The price covers the repair, testing and the warranty.

Which symptoms point to a faulty Renault control unit?

Typical symptoms of a faulty Renault control unit are: jerking during gear changes, the gearbox entering limp mode, delayed response to gear changes, implausible fault codes during diagnosis, adaptation problems and the car suddenly being stuck in one gear.

Do you provide a warranty on Renault gearbox repairs?

Yes, every Renault automatic gearbox repair we carry out is covered by a warranty. Control unit repairs come with 12 months; mechanical repairs with 6 to 24 months depending on the scope of work. The warranty covers both parts and labour.

How much does an EDC gearbox repair cost on a Renault?

A Renault EDC gearbox repair is quoted individually after diagnostics with the dedicated Renault Clip / CAN Clip tool. Rebuilding the EDC mechatronic unit on its own (Hall sensor board, module repair, cloning to the VIN) is usually a smaller job than replacing the K1/K2 clutches. Replacing the clutch pack in a 6DCT250 means removing the gearbox and running the mandatory adaptation, so the full cost depends on the condition of the mechatronic unit, the bearings and the friction plates. We set out the complete scope of work with a quote before we start.

What do fault codes DF1111 and DF1112 mean in a Renault EDC gearbox?

In a Renault EDC gearbox, DF1111 means the bite point of clutch K1 (even gears: 2, 4, 6) has been lost, and DF1112 means the same for clutch K2 (odd gears: 1, 3, 5, 7). The usual causes are worn friction plates, worn Hall sensors in the mechatronic unit, or an incorrect calibration after an oil change. The code alone is not enough to judge the repair – a full check of the hydraulic readings and of the fault history is needed.

Do you repair X-Tronic CVT gearboxes in the Renault Captur and Kadjar?

Yes, we service X-Tronic CVT gearboxes (Jatco JF015E and JF016E) as fitted to the Renault Captur and Kadjar. We carry out diagnostics, Nissan NS-3 oil changes and full rebuilds with a new steel belt, new bearings and a rebuilt oil pump. The symptoms worth having checked are a steady whine, vibration when pulling away and an overheating warning. An adaptation reset after the repair is mandatory.

Which oil does the EDC gearbox in a Renault Clio or Megane take?

The 6-speed EDC (6DCT250 / DC4) takes an oil made for dry dual-clutch gearboxes — Renault Type-W or an equivalent to the Getrag specification. The 7-speed EDC (7DCT300, wet) takes Type-D oil for wet DCTs. X-Tronic CVT oil (NS-3) and the ATF from a conventional DP0/AL4 are NOT interchangeable with EDC oil — getting this wrong destroys the mechatronic unit straight away.

Is the EDC gearbox in a Renault the same design as the Ford PowerShift?

The 6-speed Renault EDC (Getrag 6DCT250 / DC4) and the 6-speed dry Ford PowerShift (Getrag DPS6) come from the same Getrag DCT family and share a similar design of K1/K2 clutches and mechatronic unit. The adaptation procedures are equivalent. The 7-speed Renault EDC (7DCT300, wet) is a separate design — closer to the wet 6DCT450 than to the dry PowerShift.

Can I bring my car in from outside the Lublin region?

Yes. Most mechatronic unit and control unit repairs are handled remotely: the customer sends the module by courier (we supply removal instructions on request) and we send it back after the rebuild with a test report. Cars are taken in at our workshop in Deszkowice Drugie near Zamość. We repair Renaults from all over Poland either way — which route suits you depends on the scope of the work.
