Programming / Cloning / Adaptation of the GETRAG 7G DCT Control Unit in Mercedes AMG Cars

The GETRAG 7G DCT (Speedshift DCT) is an advanced 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox fitted to the most powerful Mercedes-AMG models. Its TCM control unit needs specialist programming and adaptation. We offer complete programming, cloning and repair services for GETRAG 7G DCT control units.

Supported Mercedes-AMG models

  • A45 AMGW176
  • CLA45 AMGC117
  • GLA45 AMGX156

What is the GETRAG 7G DCT?

The GETRAG 7G DCT, also known as the AMG Speedshift DCT 7-Speed, is an advanced dual-clutch gearbox developed by GETRAG (now Magna Powertrain) together with Mercedes-AMG. Its defining features are:

  • Lightning-fast gear changes – under 100 milliseconds
  • High strength – handles up to 600 Nm of torque
  • Two clutches – one for the odd gears, the other for the even ones
  • AMG modes – Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Race (on some models)
  • Launch Control – the system for optimum racing starts

When is DCT control unit programming needed?

Programming the GETRAG 7G DCT control unit is essential in the following cases:

  • Replacing a faulty TCM control unit – an electronic or a mechanical failure
  • After a DCT gearbox repair – clutch replacement, mechatronics
  • Fitting a used control unit – a module from another vehicle
  • Communication faults – the control unit does not talk to the ECU
  • After a software update – when re-adaptation is required
  • Dropping into limp mode – limp mode with no mechanical cause

Our GETRAG 7G DCT programming services

1. Control unit cloning

If you have the original, working control unit, we can carry out a full clone:

  • A complete configuration read from the original TCM
  • Transfer of all the data onto the new module
  • Copying of the adaptation parameters – keeping the shift characteristics
  • VIN and code synchronisation – full compatibility with the vehicle

2. Restoring the Virgin state

For control units that come from other vehicles, or that are damaged:

  • Clearing the vehicle data – removing the VIN and the history
  • Adaptation memory reset – a clean learning profile
  • Preparation for programming through Xentry/DAS
  • Unlocking the module – when the control unit is locked

3. Adaptation after a gearbox repair

After a mechanical repair of the DCT gearbox we offer:

  • A reset of the adaptation values
  • Calibration of the clutch touch points
  • The basic learning procedure
  • A road test with a check of the parameters

Why bench programming?

We work with professional programming tools from Launch, Topdon, Flex (MMS), PCMFlash, OBDStar and many others, which allow us to:

  • Work without the vehicle – programming directly on the TCM module
  • Full access to the memory – reading and writing every area
  • Get past the security locks – lawful programming without dealer-only limits
  • A safe operation – no risk to the vehicle

Signs of GETRAG DCT control unit problems

A damaged or incorrectly programmed DCT control unit can cause:

  • A message on the display – "7G DCT Transmission Visit Workshop"
  • Limp mode – locked in 3rd or 5th gear, with no way to change
  • Sudden/harsh gear changes – especially with a cold gearbox
  • Vibration when pulling away – problems with the clutch learning
  • The AMG modes not working – Sport, Sport+, Race inactive
  • Launch Control misbehaving – the system does not work, or works badly
  • Fault codes – P0700, P0706, P0715, P17XX, P28XX

How the service works

Frequently asked questions

What is the GETRAG 7G DCT?

The GETRAG 7G DCT is a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox developed by GETRAG for Mercedes-Benz and fitted mainly to AMG models. It is known for lightning-fast gear changes (under 100ms) and for coping with high torque. It is also called the Speedshift DCT 7.

Which Mercedes models have the GETRAG 7G DCT?

The GETRAG 7G DCT (type 724.0) is fitted to the compact AMG models: the Mercedes A45 AMG, CLA45 AMG and GLA45 AMG (M133 engine). Three confusions are worth clearing up: the C63 AMG and E63 AMG do not have a DCT – they use the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT, a 7G-TRONIC-based design with a start-off clutch in place of the torque converter; while the SLS AMG and AMG GT do have a Getrag dual-clutch gearbox, it is a different design (the 7DCL, a rear-mounted transaxle) with its own control unit; and the S models with the M139 engine (A45 S – W177, CLA45 S – C118, GLA45 S – H247) have the 8-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 8G, a different gearbox that this page does not cover.

When is DCT control unit programming needed?

DCT control unit programming is needed after the TCM has been replaced, after a DCT gearbox repair, after the module has been cloned, when the vehicle does not recognise the control unit, or when the module comes from another vehicle and has to be adapted or returned to the virgin state.

Can a GETRAG DCT be programmed without the car?

Yes. With professional programming equipment we can program, clone and virgin-reset GETRAG 7G DCT control units on the bench (bench mode, boot mode), with no need for the car to be present. That speeds the job up and brings the cost down.

How long does GETRAG 7G DCT programming take?

The standard GETRAG 7G DCT programming and adaptation process takes 24 to 48 hours from the moment the module arrives. For local customers we offer an express service completed within one working day.
