Programming / Cloning / Adaptation of the VGS4-NAG2 Module in FBS4 Mercedes Cars

Adapting VGS4-NAG2 modules in modern Mercedes cars raises a great many questions, particularly around the 722.9 Gen4 gearboxes fitted to FBS4 / DAS4 generation vehicles. We offer a professional VGS4-NAG2 adaptation, cloning and programming service to make this difficult problem easier to solve.

Supported Mercedes-Benz models

What is the VGS4-NAG2?

The VGS4-NAG2 is a fully integrated gearbox control unit whose job is to control gear changes through electro-hydraulic valves and a built-in circuit board carrying the adaptive logic. It is a key component of the modern 7-speed Mercedes 722.9 gearboxes fitted to models such as the A217 and C217 S63 AMG, S65 AMG and 4MATIC, where the high torque called for a more advanced control unit than the one used in the newer nine-speed gearboxes.

Why is VGS4-NAG2 adaptation complicated?

VGS4-NAG2 adaptation calls for the right tools and technical knowledge, because every module is tied to unique FBS (Fingerprint-Based Security) data. The key challenge is reading that data out and preparing the module either to work with a new vehicle or to be returned to its factory ("virgin") state.

The main challenges:

  • The FBS4 security system – every module is uniquely paired with its vehicle
  • Unique configuration data – required for correct communication with the ECU
  • Adaptive logic – the control unit has to learn the characteristics of the individual gearbox
  • OBD limitations – not every operation can be carried out through the diagnostic socket

How do we do it?

1. Adaptation using the original control unit

With professional programming equipment we are able to:

  • Personalise a new VGS4-NAG2 board with no mechanical intervention
  • Safely transfer the FBS data off the original control unit
  • Clone the complete configuration onto the new module
  • Keep the adaptation parameters so the gearbox runs at its best

2. Adaptation without the original control unit

If the original control unit is not available, we offer:

  • Returning the module to the "virgin" state – a complete reset of the FBS data
  • Programming the basic vehicle data – VIN, configuration
  • Adaptation on the vehicle – once the reset module has been fitted

Why can OBD not always be used?

Not every VGS4-NAG2 module can be adapted over OBD, because of hardware and software limitations. In those cases the module has to be connected on the bench and worked on manually, which is exactly what we do in our workshop, with full precision.

The benefits of our service

  • Professionalismwe work with the latest programming tools from Launch, Topdon, Flex, PCMFlash, OBDStar and others to deliver the highest quality of adaptation
  • Time and money savedour solutions avoid having to buy an expensive new VGS board from a main dealer
  • Safetywe guarantee that the adaptation is carried out to the highest standards
  • Full coveragewe handle every Mercedes model fitted with the VGS4-NAG2 module
  • Bench workprogramming is possible without the vehicle, saving on transport
  • Warrantywe provide a warranty on every programming job we carry out

The most common signs of VGS4-NAG2 problems

A damaged or incorrectly programmed VGS4-NAG2 control unit can cause the following symptoms:

  • The gearbox drops into limp mode
  • Locked in a single gear (usually 2nd or 3rd)
  • No gear changes at all, or delays when shifting
  • Fault messages on the display: "Transmission - visit workshop"
  • Harsh or juddering gear changes
  • Fault codes: P0700, P0715, P0730, P2767, P2819

How the service works

  1. Contact and scope of workestablishing whether you have the original control unit
  2. Sending the module inthe control unit can be sent by courier, or you can bring it in person
  3. Diagnosticschecking the condition of the module and whether its data can be read
  4. Programming/Cloningtransferring the data, or a virgin reset, using professional programming tools
  5. Verificationchecking that the written data is correct
  6. Return of the modulethe programmed control unit is sent back, or collected in person

Frequently asked questions

What is the VGS4-NAG2?

The VGS4-NAG2 is the fully integrated control unit of the Mercedes 722.9 Gen4 gearbox, which controls gear changes through electro-hydraulic valves and a built-in circuit board carrying the adaptive logic. It is used in Mercedes models with the FBS4/DAS4 system, particularly the high-torque AMG versions.

When is VGS4-NAG2 adaptation needed?

VGS4-NAG2 adaptation is needed after the control unit has been replaced, after a gearbox repair, after the module has been cloned, or when the vehicle does not recognise the control unit that has been fitted. It is also needed when the module was previously used in another vehicle and has to be returned to its factory (virgin) state.

Can a VGS4-NAG2 be programmed without the car?

Yes. With professional programming equipment we can program, clone and virgin-reset VGS4-NAG2 control units on the bench, with no need for the vehicle to be present. That saves both the time and the cost of transporting the car.

Which Mercedes models are fitted with the VGS4-NAG2?

The VGS4-NAG2 is fitted to the W222/W221 (S-Class), A217/C217 (S63 AMG, S65 AMG), W212/W207 (E-Class), W204 (C-Class), W166/X166 (ML/GL/GLE) and other models with the 7-speed 722.9 Gen4 gearbox and the FBS4 system.

How long does VGS4-NAG2 programming take?

Standard VGS4-NAG2 programming and adaptation takes between 1 and 3 hours, depending on the scope of the work (cloning, virgin reset or full personalisation). Most jobs are completed within a single working day.
