Ford gearbox repair — HF35, PowerShift, 6F35

Ford uses several different families of automatic gearbox and each one needs a different repair procedure. That is why the first diagnostic step is always to confirm the exact gearbox designation from the VIN and the control unit codes:

  • HF35 eCVT (hybrid) — Mondeo / Fusion / C-Max Hybrid, Lincoln MKZ Hybrid. Classic symptoms: a grinding noise from the differential, Mercon LV oil leaks, P0A codes.
  • PowerShift 6DCT450 / MPS6 (wet) — Mondeo, S-Max, Galaxy and Kuga with 2.0 TDCi diesel engines. A dual-clutch unit sharing its design with the Volvo PowerShift. Mechatronic unit and K1/K2 clutch problems.
  • PowerShift DPS6 (dry) — Fiesta, Focus, B-Max. Classic symptoms are jerking and oil leaks from the clutch module. Procedurally close to the 6-speed Renault EDC.
  • 6F35 (classic automatic) — selected Fusion and Escape models with a torque converter.
  • 10R80 (10-speed) — Mustang, F-150 (rarely seen in Europe).

For a general overview of Ford gearboxes see also the Ford brand page.

CVT and semi-automatic gearbox service (DCT, EDC)

Semi-automatic is the everyday name for anything without a third pedal that is not a classic torque-converter automatic either. Two quite different designs fall into this category:

  • Dual-clutch gearboxes (DCT) — DSG, S-Tronic, PowerShift, EDC, 7DCT D7UF1. They have two clutches (K1/K2) switched by a mechatronic unit. Great performance, but they need regular servicing and are expensive to repair once neglected.
  • Automated manual gearboxes (AMT) — Easytronic (Opel), ETG (PSA), Renault Quickshift. A manual gearbox with a single, electrically operated clutch. Their usual troubles are actuator failures and clutch position sensors.
  • CVT (continuously variable) — Jatco X-Tronic (Renault), Multitronic (Audi). They use a steel belt instead of gears. They need a dedicated oil (NS-3) changed every 40,000–60,000 km — a late change destroys the belt, the most expensive part of the repair.

Frequently asked questions

Which gearboxes does ElektroSkrzynie repair – only automatics, or CVTs and semi-automatics too?

We repair every type of automatic gearbox: classic torque-converter units (Mercedes 7G/9G-Tronic, ZF 8HP in BMW, Ford 6F35, PSA AL4/DP0), dual-clutch DCTs (VW/Audi DSG/S-Tronic DQ200, DQ250, DL501, DL382, Ford PowerShift 6DCT450/DPS6, Renault EDC, Hyundai/Kia 7DCT D7UF1), CVTs (Jatco JF015E/JF016E in Renault, Subaru Lineartronic TR580/TR690) and hybrid eCVTs (Ford HF35 in the Mondeo/Fusion/C-Max Hybrid, auxiliary pumps in Lexus Hybrid models). The term semi-automatic is used loosely for both dual-clutch gearboxes (DSG, EDC, PowerShift) and automated manuals (Easytronic, ETG) — both are within our scope.

Do you repair Ford gearboxes – PowerShift, HF35, 6F35?

Yes. Ford uses several families of automatic gearbox and each one needs a different procedure. For the PowerShift 6DCT450 / MPS6 (a wet dual-clutch unit fitted to the Mondeo, S-Max, Galaxy and Kuga with diesel engines) we run a dedicated page. For the PowerShift DPS6 (a dry dual-clutch unit in the Fiesta, Focus and B-Max) we repair the mechatronic unit and replace the K1/K2 clutches. For the hybrid HF35 eCVT (Mondeo/Fusion/C-Max Hybrid, Lincoln MKZ Hybrid) we replace the differential and transfer shaft bearings. We also service the classic 6F35 and the 10R80.

Where do customers travel from – does the workshop cover only the Lublin region or all of Poland?

The workshop itself is in Deszkowice Drugie near Zamość (Sułów commune, Lublin Province, Poland). We take cars in from across the Lublin region — Zamość, Biłgoraj, Lublin, Chełm, Krasnystaw, Kraśnik, Tomaszów Lubelski, Hrubieszów and Szczebrzeszyn — and from neighbouring areas (Annopol, Poniatowa, Opole Lubelskie, Dęblin). Mechatronic units and TCM/TCU control units are accepted by courier from anywhere in Poland: the customer sends the module in, and we return it after the rebuild with a test report.

How does repairing a CVT differ from repairing a dual-clutch DSG?

A CVT (continuously variable, e.g. the Jatco JF015E in the Renault X-Tronic) uses a steel belt and conical pulleys — typical failures are a worn belt, shaft bearings and the oil pump. It needs a dedicated oil (Nissan NS-3). The Subaru Lineartronic (TR580/TR690) is a CVT with a chain drive and its own group of faults — most often the pressure control solenoids in the hydraulic control unit (code P0971). DSG and other dual-clutch gearboxes (VAG DQ250, Ford PowerShift, Hyundai 7DCT) have two clutches, K1/K2, and an electrohydraulic mechatronic unit — typical failures are worn clutches, mechatronic unit failure and adaptation errors. They need a different oil (Type-D, Type-W or Mercon LV depending on the design). The diagnostics and the repair procedures are completely different.

Is repairing a gearbox cheaper than fitting a used one?

In most cases yes. A DSG/PowerShift/EDC mechatronic unit rebuild, K1/K2 clutch replacement or new bearings in an HF35 all cost clearly less than a used gearbox with an unknown history. A repair also gives you control over parts quality (original or proven equivalents) and 6–24 months of warranty, whereas a used gearbox is a gamble. Fitting a brand-new gearbox is an option only with extensive mechanical damage (e.g. damaged gears or a cracked casing).

How long does a gearbox repair at ElektroSkrzynie take?

A mechatronic unit or control unit sent in by courier: 2–5 working days for the rebuild plus transport. A repair on the car with the gearbox removed (e.g. K1/K2 clutch replacement in a DSG/PowerShift, bearings in an HF35): typically 3–7 working days. A full rebuild with the casing opened and many components replaced: up to 7–10 days. Every repair ends with an adaptation procedure in the car (clutch bite-point learning or a control unit parameter reset).
