The DQ250 (VAG code 02E) is a 6-speed automatic DSG gearbox with a wet dual clutch, built by BorgWarner and used across the VAG group since 2003. It is one of the most common automatic gearboxes in Europe, fitted to the Audi S3/A3, VW Golf GTI/R, Skoda Octavia RS, Seat Leon Cupra and many other models.

What is the DQ250 (02E) DSG gearbox?
The DQ250 (factory code 02E) is a 6-speed automatic DSG gearbox with a dual wet clutch, built by BorgWarner. It was the first production DSG gearbox in the VAG group (from 2003) and to this day remains the most common automatic gearbox in Poland. Unlike the newer 0B5 S-Tronic (DL501) and the 7-speed 0CK S-Tronic (DL382) – the DQ250 has 6 speeds and is designed for engines producing up to around 350 Nm (uprated versions are fitted to the Audi S3, Golf R and Cupra R).
- Wet dual clutch K1/K2 – two clutches running in an oil bath (BorgWarner), able to take more torque than the dry DSG (DQ200)
- 6 ratios – odd gears (1, 3, 5) on one shaft, even gears (2, 4, 6, R) on the other – shifts with no break in torque
- Mechatronic unit with TCU J743 – integrated hydraulic and electronic assembly with N88/N89 solenoids and pressure sensors – the heart of the whole gearbox

The most common DQ250 faults
The DQ250 has a few characteristic weak points – different ones for the mechatronic unit, for the wet clutches and for the mechanical parts. Below is an overview of the failures we see most often in the workshop:
The most common DQ250 failure. Worn N88/N89 solenoids, a seized plunger regulating clutch pressure or failed solder joints on the TCU PCB cause codes P17BF, P173E and P189C and a loss of clutch pressure.

Wet clutches run in oil, but after 150,000–250,000 km the friction plates lose thickness. The result is slip, code P17D1 and no response to the throttle under load.

A classic mechanical failure – worn output shaft bearings produce a characteristic whine or howl in one specific gear. No codes appear in the OBD system, because the sensors do not detect mechanical noise.

The tapered differential bearings in the DQ250 are a typical weak point at higher mileage. Wear shows up as a whine under load that rises with speed – often mistaken for wheel bearings.

DQ250 fault codes
These are the OBD fault codes read out most often when a DQ250 fails. Keep in mind that some mechanical faults (such as shaft bearings) may not generate any codes at all – the diagnosis then has to be made by ear and on a road test.

Symptoms that call for a workshop visit
DQ250 failure symptoms fall into two groups: electronic ones (jerking, limp mode, OBD codes) that signal a fault in the mechatronic unit or the clutches, and mechanical ones (whine, vibration) that point to the shaft and differential bearings. DQ250 (02E) DSG mechatronic unit repair and rebuild
The mechatronic unit is the electrohydraulic heart of the DQ250 DSG gearbox — the assembly that combines the TCU J743 control unit, the valve body with its hydraulic channels and the pack of N88/N89 solenoids controlling K1/K2 clutch pressure. This is where most DQ250 fault codes originate: P17BF, P173E, P189C, P1895 (loss of clutch pressure) and some occurrences of P17D1, when a valve plunger sticks on wear while the clutches themselves are still good.
We rebuild mechatronic units off the car — the customer removes the unit and sends it in by courier (instructions on request), or brings the car to us. A full rebuild covers:
- Replacing the N88 and N89 solenoids — the most common cause of codes P17BF/P173E/P189C; original BorgWarner OEM parts.
- Cleaning the hydraulic channels of the valve body — ultrasonically, removing varnish deposits and debris from worn clutches.
- Inspecting the pressure and flow sensors and replacing any that are faulty.
- Replacing the internal mechatronic filter (the external filter in the oil pan is replaced during the oil change).
- A hydraulic pressure test on the bench — before the unit goes back to the customer we check that the K1/K2 pressures stay stable under load.
- Adaptation after refitting (VCDS/ODIS gearbox adaptation) — teaching the K1/K2 clutch bite points is mandatory.
A rebuilt mechatronic unit keeps its original coding to the car (SVM number), so after refitting it needs neither cloning nor a new control unit. If the diagnosis does point to a damaged TCU J743 PCB (burnt tracks, “dry solder joints”), a rebuild makes no sense — we replace the whole unit and carry out TCM/TCU control unit cloning so that it stays matched to the VIN. A rebuild typically takes 2–5 working days from the moment the unit arrives.
Important: a mechatronic unit rebuild does not repair the K1/K2 clutches themselves. If code P17D1 persists after the solenoids have been replaced and the unit cleaned, that is a sign the clutch friction plates are worn — the gearbox then has to be opened and the clutch pack replaced, which is the same scope as the full rebuild described below.
The scope of a DQ250 repair with us

The gearbox whines in 5th and 6th gear but there are no fault codes – what can it be?
A whine in 5th and 6th gear with no fault codes in the OBD system is the classic sign of a mechanical failure in a DQ250 gearbox – worn output shaft bearings or worn differential bearings. The gearbox control unit cannot detect this kind of damage, because its sensors measure pressure and actuator positions, not mechanical vibration. We recently repaired exactly such a car (an Audi S3) – it needed a complete strip-down and replacement of the worn bearings, bearing races, clutch, solenoids and all seals.
How does the DQ250 differ from the DQ200 and the DQ500?
The DQ250 (02E) has 6 gears, wet clutches and takes up to around 350 Nm. The DQ200 (0AM/0CW) has 7 gears, dry clutches and takes up to around 250 Nm – a completely different and less durable design. The DQ500 (0BH/0BT) has 7 gears, wet clutches and takes up to around 600 Nm – it is used in more powerful cars (VW T5/T6, Audi RS3, RSQ3). Each of these gearboxes needs different parts and different service procedures, so they must not be confused.
Can a DQ250 mechatronic unit be rebuilt instead of replaced?
In most cases a DQ250 mechatronic unit rebuild is possible and makes economic sense. We replace the worn solenoids (N88, N89), clean the hydraulic channels and inspect the pressure sensors. In rare cases (PCB damage, burnt tracks) the TCU J743 has to be replaced – that then calls for coding to the car and adaptation.
How much does a DQ250 DSG mechatronic unit rebuild cost and what does it include?
The cost of a DQ250 DSG mechatronic unit rebuild is quoted individually after diagnostics, because the scope of work depends on the damage. Which scope applies depends on the symptoms: codes P17BF/P173E/P189C with no mechanical symptoms usually call for a mechatronic unit rebuild only; mechanical noise, slip or vibration point to a full overhaul.
Which oil does the DQ250 take and how often should it be changed?
The DQ250 gearbox takes ATF oil meeting VW specification G 052 182 (previously G 052 529). A full change needs around 7 litres. Although the manufacturer describes the oil as “fill for life”, we recommend changing it every 60,000 km or 4 years – a regular change extends the life of the clutches and solenoids by tens of thousands of kilometres.
